and incomplete applications will be rejected. All

Positions within the Village of River Grove: The
following positions are filled by the Village through an
application and hiring procedure. Whenever any
position has an available opening, the Village accepts
applications for a limited period of time; reviews each
timely submitted application to verify that it is complete,
signed and notarized; rejects any incomplete applications;
and depending on the position being applied for, schedules
interviews or appropriate examinations. Upon
completing the review, examination, and interview or
examination process, the Village then compiles an
eligibility list ranking each applicant in accordance with
his or her qualifications. The eligibility list for
any position remains effective for one year from the date it
is posted in the Village Administrative Offices. The
highest ranked individual will be offered conditional
employment when any position becomes available, which
requires that the applicant successfully complete drug and
alcohol screenings; a criminal background check, if
applicable to the position; or any other examinations
required to be passed before employment is made
unconditional. All unconditional employment is deemed
probationary employment for one-year from the date an
individual’s employment becomes unconditional. At a minimum,
all applicants must be authorized to work in the United
States, have a high school diploma or its equivalent unless
the position requires more advanced education or
certification, have a current and valid Illinois Driver's
License if the position requires that you operate any motor
vehicle, and have the ability to speak, write and read
English fluently.
Positions within
the Village of River Grove
The following positions are filled by the
Village through an application and hiring procedure.

Administrative Assistant (Administrative Offices).
This full-time position is within the administrative
offices of the Village, and duties may include working

typing; sorting and delivering mail; preparing mailings;
and other customary administrative tasks as assigned by
the Village officials or supervisors. Experience
with computers required, and specific skills with
Windows, LOCIS, Word and Excel helpful. Must be
able to read and write in English, and fluency in
Spanish and/or Polish helpful. Excellent
communication and public relation skills required. Hours
include one to two Saturday half-days per month.
Administrative
Assistant – Part-Time Paid-On-Call (Administrative Offices).
This part-time, paid-on-call position is within the
administrative offices of the Village and generally requires
full-time work during the summer months, and paid-on-call
hours during the other times of the calendar year.
Position requires individual to perform any combination of
the following duties: working as or with the cashier,
data entry; typing; sorting and delivering mail; preparing
mailings; answering phones; and other customary
administrative tasks as assigned by the Village officials or
supervisors. Experience with computers required, and
specific skills with Windows, Word and Excel helpful.
Must be able to read and write in English, and fluency in
Spanish and/or Polish helpful. Excellent communication
and public relations skills required. Hours include
one to two Saturday half-days per month.

time (Police Department).

Building Department Secretary.
This full-time position requires a detail-oriented person
with excellent language, grammar and communication skills
who can handle the following responsibilities:
(a) general administrative support for the building
department; (b) customer service to walk-in and call-in
traffic; (c) accurately entering various information into
computer databases; (d) typing and preparing department
memoranda; (e) answering and screening telephone calls to
supervisory staff; and (f) answering multi-line telephone
system. Candidate must be proficient with computer
skills, permitting software knowledge a plus, MS Office and
Excel experience required, present a professional demeanor,
and be a reliable and punctual employee. High school
diploma and two years of secretarial experience required.
Building Department Inspector.
This full-time position requires that applicants be at least
eighteen (18) years of age, possess a high school diploma or
the equivalent certificate, be fluent in English, and
possess excellent reading, writing, and grammar skills.
Position requires high school diploma and minimum of two (2)
years construction experience including blueprint reading
and working knowledge of International building and property
maintenance codes. Duties include inspection,
documentation and enforcement of adopted building and
property maintenance codes. Excellent computer,
communication and public relation skills required.
Building Maintenance Coordinator.
As sole person in this position, is responsible for
maintenance and improvements for all Village owned buildings
and grounds. He will engage, and possibly supervise and
coordinate other employees and contractors in repair and
construction in regards to masonry, carpentry, utility
systems, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning
systems, equipment, roofs and other maintenance and
improvements as required. Will engage in painting, landscape
work and snow removal as needed. Orders parts and supplies
for Village facilities.
Compiles reports of costs for projects and has input into
the budget system within the scope of work for this
position. May requisition tools, equipment, and supplies.
Will inspect work for compliance to blueprints and other
specifications. Will inspect all buildings in a timely
manner to correct maintenance problems. Must have a valid
Illinois driver’s license for use in the course of duties.
Will perform all other duties as ordered.
Cashier.
This full-time position requires that applicants be at least
eighteen (18) years of age, possess a high school diploma or
the equivalent certificate, be fluent in English, and
possess excellent reading, writing, and grammar skills.
Duties include processing payments, answering telephones,
typing, filing, and mail distribution. Excellent
communication and public relation skills required; computer
and cashier experience preferred. Hours include up to two
Saturday half-days per month.
Crossing Guard – Part-Time.
This extremely important part-time position requires strict
adherence to procedures and a commitment to guarding the
well being of the children of the community. Crossing guards
do not direct traffic, but are to safely expedite the
movement of children to and from a school by utilizing gaps
in traffic. Crossing guards do not regulate traffic
patterns of enforce traffic laws. A crossing guard is to
ensure safe student crossing by supervising students as they
cross the street at various intersections and crossings;
encourage patterns of safe behavior by students, when
crossing any roadway; and to deter students from committing
unsafe and unlawful acts when leaving the school areas.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess
excellent communication skills, the ability to speak English
fluently, and a professional demeanor.
Firefighter/Paramedic – Part-Time.
This position within the Department of Emergency Services is
a part-time position and no individual firefighter/paramedic
may work more than 36 hours per week; and each individual
must be able to work at least 72 hours per month.
Applicant must possess a current and valid Illinois
Department of Public Health EMT-P Certification and a
current and valid Firefighter II Certification issued by the
Illinois State Fire Marshall, and a current and valid CPR
Card. Applicants must be willing and able to work 12
hour shifts any day of the week. To be qualified for
placement on the eligibility list, an applicant must be of
good record and good character, and be at least 21 years of
age. All applicants must provide a Letter of Good
Standing from his or her system hospital or affiliation.
Each applicant’s Letter of Good Standing, and a copy of his
or her birth certificate, high school diploma (or its
equivalent) and Fire Fighter II Certificate must be attached
to the application to qualify for the interview process.
Failure to attach these documents to the application may
disqualify an applicant for employment. Any individual
subsequently hired by the Village must complete the
probationary period of employment.
Paramedic – Part-Time.
This position is within the Department of Emergency Services
and is a part-time position. No paramedic may work more than
36 hours per week, and must be able and willing to work 12
hour shifts on any day of the week. All paramedics are
required to work at least 48 hours per month. An applicant
must possess a current and valid IDPH-EMT Paramedic
Certification and current CPR Card. A current and
valid Firefighter II Certification issued by the Illinois
State Fire Marshall is beneficial. The competition for
placement on the eligibility list is open to any applicant
of good record and good character, and who is at least 21
years of age. Each applicant must provide a Letter of
Good Standing from his or her system hospital or
affiliation. Each applicant’s Letter of Good Standing,
and a copy of his or her birth certificate, high school
diploma (or its equivalent) and Certificates must be
attached to the application to qualify for the interview
process. Failure to attach these documents to the
application may disqualify an applicant for employment.
Any individual subsequently hired by the Village must

Part-Time Police Officer.
This position is within the Police Department and is a
part-time position. No part-time police officer may work
more than 36 hours per week, and must be able and willing to
work 8 hour shifts on any day of the week. All
part-time police officers are required to work at least ___
hours per month. An applicant must possess a current and
valid Part-Time Police Officer Certification issued by the
Illinois Police Training Board. The competition for
placement on the eligibility list is open to any applicant
of good record and good character, and who is at least 21
years of age. Each applicant’s birth certificate, high
school diploma (or its equivalent) and Training Certificate
must be attached to the application to qualify for the
interview process. Failure to attach these documents
to the application may disqualify an applicant for
employment. Any individual subsequently hired by the
Village must complete the probationary period of employment.
Police Officer – Full Time.
Full-time police officers are not hired through the
Village’s personnel policies, but are appointed by the Board
of Fire and Police Commissioners of the Village in
accordance with the Illinois Fire and Police Commissioners
Act. The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
generally prepares its eligibility list every odd year, and
the application process generally commences in April of each
odd year. The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
prepares an eligibility list that is valid for 2 years from
the date of publication.
Police Department Records Clerk and
Secretary.
Position requires energetic person with excellent language,
grammar and reading skills to assist with records keeping
for the police department. Candidate must be able to handle
the following responsibilities: (a) filing and retrieval of
various documents, including case files and individual
documents from files or computer database; (b) Entry and
retrieval of information into and from various computer
databases; (c) Gathering of information in accordance with
Public Information Ac; (d) Maintenance of logs and other
record keeping controls to assure proper tracking of case
files; (e) Categorization of various statistics compiled by
the department; and (f) answering telephone calls for
records department and responding to various requests for
information concerning records and department functions.
Public Works Laborer/Equipment
Operator - Full-Time.
This full-time position performs any combination of the
following duties involved in the repair, maintenance,
installation, cleaning, landscaping and waste disposal of
and for various municipal buildings, the water and sewer
systems, streets, parkways, public lands and municipal
services of the Village: (a) landscaping and maintenance of
grounds of the Village; (b) prepare and grade terrain and
public areas; (c) apply insecticides, fertilizers, seed,
sod, and transplant various vegetation using manual and
power equipment; (d) mow and trim lawns using hand or power
equipment; (e) trim trees and other vegetation; (f) spray
lawns, trees, shrubs, and other vegetation and apply
supplemental liquid and nutrients; (g) operate chipper and
chain saw; (h) paint various equipment, buildings, and
highway markings; (i) repair or remove concrete and asphalt
streets, walks, and driveways using both manual and power
equipment in addition to a large variety of hand tools; (j)
erect and remove barricades; and (k) load and unload heavy
materials from trucks and other municipal equipment.
Position requires a current Illinois commercial driver’s
license class “B” to drive trucks and operate other heavy
equipment such as street cleaner, snow plow/salt spreader,
and applicant must be available for emergency duty
twenty-four hours per day, capable of lifting weights of one
hundred pounds, and an ability to withstand exposure to all
climatic conditions. High school diploma or equivalent
is required, and hired applicants must complete classes in
safety regulations and/or other requirements, and obtain
pesticide operator’s license.
Public Works Laborer - Part-Time
Paid-On-Call.
This part-time, paid-on-call position is within the
Department of Public Works and generally requires full-time
work during the summer months, and paid-on-call hours during
the other times of the calendar year. Position requires an
individual to perform any combination of the following
duties: the repair, maintenance, installation, cleaning,
landscaping and waste disposal of and for various municipal
buildings, water and sewer systems, streets, parkways,
public lands and municipal services. All applicants
must be sixteen (16) years of age, capable of lifting
weights of at least fifty pounds and able to withstand
extended exposure to all climatic conditions. Also
must complete classes in safety regulations and/or
requirements.
Public Works Secretary/Accounts
Payable Clerk.
This full-time position reports directly to the Director of
Public Works, and assists the Superintendent of Streets and
Alleys, and the Superintendent of Water and Sewer. This
position requires the performance of all secretarial duties
within the Public Works Department including but not limited
to: (a) answering phones, (b) documenting and categorizing
residential requests or complaints, (c) maintaining
computerized files and records of all Public Works projects,
(d) completing all other tasks as directed. Position
requires experience with computers and working knowledge of
MS Word and Excel, and a willingness to attend computer
classes as needed. Position also requires assisting Director
and Superintendents with special projects. Working knowledge
of horticulture, heavy equipment and CDL licensing is
helpful. Applicant must have a high school diploma or
equivalent for this position.
Volunteer Positions.
The following positions are based upon an individual being
willing and able to volunteer his or her time to a
particular program. These positions are generally
within the recreation department or based upon a program
designed and operated to benefit the community at-large.
Individuals do not receive any compensation for their
services and are not qualified for any benefits provided by
the Village to its full-time employees.
