Government
The Village of River Grove was incorporated in
1888 making it the oldest Village in Leyden
Township.
Before its incorporation the land was home
to the Potawatomi Indians. It became available for
sale in 1833. A bridge was erected in 1834
across the Des Plaines River on an Indian
trail was later called Grand Avenue. The original
settlement east of the river was named Cazenovia
then later Turner Park.
In 1872 land purchased on the south side of
Grand became Rhodes subdivision. Both Rhodes and
another subdivision north of Grand were
incorporated into River Grove in 1888.
Since 1888 the Villages form of government has
been headed by a Village President and 6
Trustees.
The Village Clerk is also an elected position.
All officials are elected to 4 year terms. There
is a Village election every 2 years in the month
of April, the next election will be April 2013.
